“My other workmates warned me: “Be careful, he’s got a knife!”Then I pulled my clothing apart and saw that the blood was pouring out of me.”

The Debrecen Court of Appeal upheld the first instance sentence in the case of Zsolt K. who stabbed his colleague, Zoltán Sajó in his chest in Petőfi tér. The incident happened one morning in October, 2009 when the victim and the accused set off for work together. The 2 construction workers had been working together since 2008 and –as the victim said – Zsolt K. had always been ill-natured. Many conflicts arose because he wasn’t willing to accept any advice from the more experienced workers. The relationship between the victim and the accused degenerated so far that the contentions between them proceeded to pressing charges.

That October day, several workers were waiting for their boss together when Zoltán Sajó asked Zsolt K. why he had reported him to the police. Zoltán Sajó said: “The moment I asked him I felt a blow on my chest. My other workmates warned me: “Be careful, he’s got a knife!”Then I pulled my clothing apart and saw that the blood was pouring out of me.” Zsolt K. stabbed him with a 9.5 cm long blade knife which cut a vein in his lungs and stopped in the left ventricle of his heart. Zoltán was in a coma for 4 days. Now he says: “If it hadn’t been for the October cold weather which made me dress in thick clothes, I wouldn’t be here now.”

At the hearing held at the Court of Appeal last Tuesday, the accused defended himself saying that Zoltán fell into the knife and the advocate of the accused pleaded legitimate defense situation, which the court denied. The court of appeal upheld the decision of the lower court. Zsolt K. got 7 years in prison for attempted murder.
