Culture Local News

Guest Speaker: Mrs. Nadia Arbelo-Brownson, M.Ed., PhD

The focus will be on the topics of Black woman who are making their mark on society as leading female role models. These women have devoted their talents and energies to many sectors of American society: the civil rights movement, business, politics, academia, and mass media. In each sector of society they are affirming the American Dream for women and men of all ethnicities. Removing barriers and pushing the boundaries toward greater equality, freedom, education, and employment for women of color, each of these leaders are also meeting continual challenges in their own lives.

In her doctoral research Nadia is searching for knowledge of herself as well as the world around her, thus exploring ways to relate her own identity to her ethnic history. As an American of mixed African, Hispanic, and American Indian roots, she has sought to relate her research questions of identity and empowerment for the modern female. In this research she has looked at herself in relation to her female sisters in many different cultures asking how we/her are visibly represented in public spaces and places.
