DK Accuses Government of Tanking Health-Care System

The opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) has accused the government of “tanking” Hungary’s health-care system with “a decade of budget cuts” and the law governing the legal status of health-care workers.

Citing reports of “the collapse of the health-care system”, DK politician Imre László told an online press conference that several hospital departments across the country were hemorrhaging staff and struggling to maintain their regular operations. László, who is the mayor of Budapest’s 11th district, blamed these developments on the new law on the legal status of health-care personnel. “Here we are, knee-deep in the third wave [of the pandemic], but it’s not the virus or an overload of patients, but the government that has crushed the health-care system,” László said. Now, he said, many Hungarians would remain without health care because ruling Fidesz had enacted a law affecting the sector without consulting doctors and health-care staff. “Hungarians will be the ones paying he price for the cabinet’s indifference towards what happens to the health-care system,” he said.
